Had 4 java sparrows fledge this morning. Haven't bred them for about 25 years, still a great feeling of achievement

I totally agree with you, I still get a buzz out of seeing a nest of chicks on the perch no matter how inexpensive or expensive.
I often get strange looks and comments when visitors see my pair of common grey Zebras in my big aviary along with more expensive species.
Why do I do it because I like the specie. Must admit I control the numbers rigidly though. Good post.
