Hi all!
I'm new to the forum and just about to venture into the colourful world of finches.
My wife and I live in Somerville in Victoria and have an 11 month old daughter who has just started to notice the flying rats (myna birds and starlings) in the back yard.
I bought a 2nd hand cage last night that we'll be keeping inside, it's 1.85m tall x 1m wide x 75cm deep and spacing between the wires of 1cm. We want them to have plenty of room to move, can you recommend an ideal amount to keep in that space? I was hoping for 3 pairs, would this be ok?
Also, I love the look of Gouldians, can you suggest other finches that have similar personalities and are colourful? I do quite like zebras, but I have no idea when it comes to which finches get along with each other. Please help?

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!!
So, we're looking at buying the birds within the next couple of weeks, can anybody suggest a reputable breeder in victoria? I'd much rather give my hard earned to an enthusiast rather than a pet shop...

Welcome, to this great hobby of ours, now your little girl can grow up with birds at Dads knee like I did.
Assuming this is the bar type wires not squares, the smaller finches can get out sideways. As I found out the hard way some years ago. So medium to large finches like Gouldians or bigger are the go. Because all your size is up not sideways and birds work like planes not helicopters, you do not have an ideal style of cage. Sorry. Is there some way you can put it sideways? If not 1 pair, if so 2 pairs of different types. Just my considered oppinion for what it is worth.
