It's funny the way things work.... Building new aviaries this week & was thinking about my uncle that got me into birds when I was a kid, around 10 or so, he was a parrot man & had an acre block filled with most fussed over & well thought out aviaries. He started me off with some red rumps, scalies & some rosellas.
He was a bit dismayed when visited us a few years later that was mad keen on finches. Anyway I'm 40 now and after 15 years or so I'm back into it..... Got a call this morning that Uncle Gordon had passed way last night.

Farewell old fella, your knowledge & willingness to teach me stuff I wouldn't have a clue to start with stay with me now as I return to my obsession, even if it's " with those bloody finches, fussy little buggers"

Take some time to think about who got you into this addictive thing we do.
Deano.

I lost my father when I was 5 years old. He was a Finch man in the old country. I am 70 now, I am sure it was in my Genes.
RIP for your uncle.

Sorry for your loss.

My father initially got me into birds. He passed away 4 years ago and my mother still refuses to sell his birds.

Then when I came to Sydney, a few people that stick in my mind are Norm who owned the Bird Shop were I bought my first canary, and invited me to a club meeting. Then Stan who I met at the club and I went to his house and had never seen a bird room like it. Over 100 canaries that were bigger and brighter than any I had seen before. It seems now that all the clubs have older members and not near as many younger members joining.

My current mentor Roy who also is getting on and still provides advice that you can't get from a book. He has forgotten more that most people know. His best line is "I've told you that before, you must have forgotten". My standard reply is "Roy I write it all down in my notepad. You must have told someone else."

Sorry for your loss. And it is funny how people get into birds. When I was ten started with 2pair of zebras in a cage my grandad made. And I agree with you Spitfire, it is in the genes.

Sorry for your loss.
I started because I always loved all the aviaries at my grandads house, just a shame he didn't get to see me full take up the hobby, as he died before I got my aviaries. Uncle keeps birds too, has been a huge help with everything.

My nana got me into birds accidently she says when I went to put her pet cat down with her and I ended up coming home with a little blue Budgie when I was 5 years old that the vet gave me and then got more Budgies then to Zebra Finches and more birds and have not been without birds since.

This hobby seems to circle its way through people's lives and keeps alive the memories of those who started us on the journey.

Family are a strong starter in birding. My dad got my mum into it not long after they married, then they got me into it. Dad has been gone over 20 yrs now, but some things stay with you. And mum still has her precious budgies, for almost 60yrs now.
