Can I house red siskins with diamonds. Should I select quieter birds such as stars, cordons etc.
Cheers,

My siskins produced young with diamonds with no problems.

Just provide more than one brush site so there is room for all.

Zebs and gouldians seem to annoy the siskins in my experience. That siad I had too many gould in my big aviary and they would have bothered anything in that number. I found sez and goulds will steal nesting material or get to close to the nest too often.

Diamonds seem to keep to themselves in my experience.

Number of birds per aviary relative to aviary size is an important consideration, especially with more challenging species.
This is a very gross generalisation, but for species over $100/pr to maximise breeding prospects I would run half the number of pairs compared to a mix of species under $100/pr and place greater emphasis on choosing smaller & more placid species to mix with the more challenging ones (bearing in mind that the ideal breeding setup is one pair per aviary & every extra bird poses potential hazards to breeding success with challenging species). Also if you find yourself needing to ask should you use include a species which you have reservations over because of its size or temperament, then it probably is a poor choice compared to smaller/more placid options. There will always be exceptions where breeding success occurs under extreme or adverse circumstances, but more challenging species require a little more forethought to maximise their prospects of consistent success compared to "bomb-proof' species.

Thanks guys for your insights and experiences. I have found diamonds in the past to keep to themselves, just looking to see if anyone had difference experiences. Yes overcrowding is a common problem with a lot of aviculturist. Generally because we can't resist buying more birds. I have in recent times looked to specialise in selected species what ever the value and in doing so reduced the number of occupants in my aviaries. The breeding & condition of the birds have improved as a result.
