I am building a avairy that will be 12 mtr wide and 8 mtr deep with a 1.2 walkway at the back
It will be one cage but seperated by brush etc the back 4 mtr so will have 4 different breeding areas
I have been think about the birds I am going to put in it and would like some thoughts

Painted
Stars
Rf parrot Finch or maybe Tri colour
Red siskins
Red strawberry (not sure if suit the siskins)
Blue caps
Green singer
Diamonds
Yellow winged pytilia

Any thoughts how they would go in that sized cage ?

Thanks in advance

12m x 8m, sounds tasty.
Can't offer any advice though.
Only kept Stars and Painteds.

my only advice would be that in time, you may wish you had built a number of smaller aviaries rather than one large one - so if you design this in mind, you may thank yourself later on. some species don't get along (cubans and green singers) some hybridise (strawberry's and orange breasts) and sometime you may want to select the pair you wish to bond. personally i'd annex about a 3rd of the space for a few isolation/breeding avairies.

my only other advice would be to put clear plastic roof as much of the avairy as you can afford

Thanks for the tip but my design will allow me to divide the cage into 4 separate flights of 3 mtr wide and 6.8 mtr long.
Not sure about the plastic sheeting. I am in Qld and that will make it very hot. I will have some poly sheets but to many and it would be like a oven.

Sounds good to me. The main ones I would keep an eye on in that lot would be possible competitive interaction of Green Singers toward Red Siskins. May be fine but just keep an eye on them as Singer temperament varies significantly.
Strawbs shouldn't be a drama from or to Red Siskins.
Again depends on individual temperament but Diamonds may be a little boisterous for the Bluecaps (& perhaps YW Pytilias) to breed well.
Lastly, Tri-coloured PFs would also be a less boisterous (better) option to mix with BCs, YWPs & Red Siskins compared to RFPFs.
Good luck.

actually the good plastic sheeting you can get nowdays should actually absorb heat. Melbourne actually has intense summers and I always found the plastic to absorb plenty of heat. that said, roofing is more of an issue for us to protect against wet in cooler weather as it can be a deadly combination. so maybe i'm being a bit southerner-focused. if your in the tropics i'm sure its not such a problem. just a bit jealous....

Hey toothless
Don't be
I am in country Qld and we get down to -7 and then the bloody wind
So I am looking at full roof and sides and then some how shut the front up during winter
Not sure how yet but will work it out
BluJay

Just have fun with it. You'll perfect it. Experiment with suggested ideas, and tweak them to work best for you. I have put two aviaries up inside my building. Fronts: 2.26m, sides: 1.48m, heights:1.96m. And don't quite know what I want to do with them as of yet.
I use a clear plastic - like cafe use on their patios that I can roll up or down on the building doors, and shade cloth as screen on nice days. Regards.

Re shutting the front up in winter.
I remember reading an article in Just finches about Tasmanian bird breeders who that and there were photographs of the aviary. That might offer a few ideas. Cant remember the issue sorry.
