DNA sexing in Victoria

Hi all ,just wondering where people get their birds dna sexed in melboune,rang the vet in scoresby today and was quoted $35.00 per bird plus consultation fee,think this is a bit steep ,if anyone knows of somebody else i would be interested,thanks garyh.

That would be surgically sexed not dna. Dna solutions charge about $17.90 for one bird and about $14.90 for ten or more.There are cheaper out there I am currently trying one for $9.90 a bird ten or more. Click on the Advertisement link to see more.

As for your initial post, I just wanted to clarify a few things.
The $35 sexing fee quoted to you is for them to collect the blood samples and send them for DNA sexing. The consult fee is only charged for pet birds. If you are prepared to collect the samples yourself then send them directly to the lab and you will save money that way and don't need to go to the vet.
The vets at Scoresby only collect blood samples as these are much more accurate than feathers. They only deal with labs that deal with blood samples for this reason.

Are there any studies on the relative accuracy of blood versus feather DNA sexing?
My naive view was that either should be fine assuming the sample is collected without contamination.
I have had a few reports lately where DNA feather sexing has proved to be inaccurate. In each case there has been other factors at play that may well have caused the inaccuracy - doubtful collection method, rare species and possibly confusing sample identification.
