Hi Team,
Today I went out an picked a heap of green seeding grasses and was just wandering how long I can store it in the freezer for? Thanks in advance.

I'm still using the last of my bags from last year, the birds are eating it and it looks no different from freshly frozen seeds but don't know if the nutritional value has changed

I would say after about 3 to 6 months it isn't quite as good as when only frozen for a month or two, but it doesn't really slow the birds down too much. They still relish it.
As for stripping it, I don't think it would make a difference nutritionally, but it is hard work. All I typically do when I'm freezing seeding heads is cut the stem off just below the start of the seeding head and put them in sandwich bags. Typically about a weeks worth in one bag, but I only have a small set up.
Cheers

I am on my last 10 L bucket from last year 12 months old. I have just harvested and froze another eight two litre containers in the last few days.I cut the seed head off. Then run the lot through a chaff cutter then freeze. When I am ready I then mix the green seed in with the other ingredients ready to feed out daily.one reasonably full 10 litre bucket of seed and stem gives me one two litre tub after chopping it down.

Hi Lachlan, do you look for any particular type of seeding grass or will any seeding grass do? I picked some while on the golf course today which I gave to my birds and they were fighting over it not sure what grass it was but is it safe to give them any seeding grass or not?Lachlan1 wrote:Hi Team,

There are plenty to choose between and some are more seasonal than others but the 2 I focus on are Pannicum and Oats (not sure if correct names) I'll take a picture of them in a minute so you can see what they look like. The reason I focus on these two is I find all my finches love them and they are pretty easy to access. I always feed my finches sprouted seed, kale, spinach, boo choy and seeding grass grown from finch mix daily as well as the other 2 grasses previously stated.
