Hello all, I've been lurking for a few weeks and it's time to introduce myself. A friend at work has birds [hello panthersteve] and he's rekindled my interest in finches.
So I'm building a small cage 1.6m x.8mx.8m for a pair of painted finches, maybe later build something bigger if the bug bites.
My father and I had finches about 48 years ago, lots of finches, 9 avery's all about 6' x 6' x 8', we breed, showed and trapped all sorts. Plenty of fond memories of rising early to travel in Dad's 67' Valiant wagon loaded with self made traps to some destination near Rockhampton to either trap blackthroats around the Caves area or firebrow finches in the Berserker ranges. This meant driving for an hour walking to a water hole, setting traps with callers and sitting quietly waiting for the sun to rise. Mid morning when time to head home we'd cut a white-ant nest off a tree to feed the birds at home. Fantastic stuff.
Regards
