Went to feed my birds this morning and looking up at the parrotfinch nest could see a chick at the opening of the nest box. Was just about to go and get the camera when 3 chicks came out in a flurry of feathers and uncontrolled landing techniques. It was a wonder none of them were injured and couldn't help thinking each one got some help from the one next in line. Couldn't stay any longer to see how many more are still in the box but could see another one just inside. Sure makes your day to see something like this.
This is the third lot of chicks for this pair this season, do I take the box out? They have been adding feathers to the box again over the last few days so am pretty sure they would start again unless I intervene.

Well Done Redwing  ...I have found once Parrot finches start pretty much no stopping them...a lot of times even if you take the box out they will find somewhere else to nest...I find easiest way to give the hen a rest is to seperate them...

I'm happy to hear, however I always wondered why people don't use a a nest box with one side that is made from clear material like glass or plexiglass this way you can have full view inside the nest without interrupting the birds or invading their space?

I wish you had a chance to see all birds come out if there are more of them.

TF if you have ever seen a Parrot finch nest...clear side or not you wont see in...their nests are packed to overflowing....

Very interested in the glass nest boxes TF,how many bird species do you use them with ,what are the breeding results compared to normal nest boxes ,which birds are better suited to these types of boxes, how long have you been using them ,have you tried filming these birds in the nest, garyh

Certainly does Gary. This is their first season, so pretty happy for a clutches of 3s and 4. Have taken the box out and there was a bucket full of nesting material in it! Don't know how the young fitted in. Will send the male off to summer camp with the canaries for a month or so to give the hen a rest as soon as the chicks are weaned.

It's not competely made of glass just one side of it is made from glass. We use them here for wild ird when we put up. Ird homes for them do we can take a look through the back.

I haven't any results because I'm currently cage breeding and my birds use open cup nests.
