Yeah, they are a beautiful bird, and seem to be underrated. What they lack in colour they make up for in textures and behaviour. I haven't had them before, got them from John in Ramsgate in Winter.
Avid amateur aviculturalist; I keep mostly australian and foreign finches.

Yep agree Matty... have them wild around here, as well as Double Bars and Redbrows...so I just leave old seed out for them...they come in large flocks...I thought about keeping them but when they come in everyday really no point.. lots of juveniles amongst them too..mattymeischke wrote:Yeah, they are a beautiful bird, and seem to be underrated. I know how you feel about snakes I hame 10mm wire and never gave snakes a thought until today when I found a tiger snake eating my young painteds I reckon he has been in the aviary for a few weeks, as he couldn't possibly fit through the wire now. I was blaming the cutthroats for flicking out the young

These are happy pics: note darker beak on cock, scruffy head on hen and bent tails on both.

...and Eurasian Skylark, the absolute king of the singers.
This is a cock, you can just make out the long back toe.
For those not familiar with them, he has a crest which is slicked down in this photo.
Trying to look inconspicuous, I suppose. The hen has a longer back toe even than him (can be sexed by it if you are Maltese (I'm not and I can't)).
She was nowhere to be seen today. Fingers crossed.
They were wild caught birds, this is my second year with them and they (two pair, sexed by a Maltese man) have done nothing so far.
To be fair, they have been in with that snake...
