Was reflecting on this post today. It was a pretty crappy year in general and the season at present seems to be following suit.

1) Out cross my blues to some of the strong normals I bred in 2014 to establish a large colony of strong split bits

This one was a partial fail. i have a few split blues but I lost all my blues both young and old, bred and bought so I sold them and kept the splits.

2) Breed aviary bred goldfinches
This one went ok. Cant complain.

3) Start a decent line of red zebs, I already have good base stock and young on the perch but the real work will start early next year after the first cull.
This project has been irritating. I have bred heaps and lost heaps. this is the only line of zebs that land in the water dish and drown. My undesirables can land head first and seem to survive. I do however have some really coloured birds, fawn charcoal with red breast, head and edging on feathers. I also have crossed in some black fronted birds and this has produced dark grey birds with red edging in the feathers and full red breast and chest. Looks like the chestnut flanks have just extended across the front.

Accomplishments:

Bred two lutino lineolated parrots. That was an unexpected and very much appreciated achievement. With the season still kicking and two eggs in the nest I may have some more soon.

I bred some oriental greenfinches. Was nice but I may move them on. Been there and done that now and I honestly believe they need larger aviaries e.g at least 6 ms long by 6 ms wide. I find that they are too flightly in my 1.7 x 1 meter aviary and my other flight that is roughly 2.6x1x1.8 high. They are one of my favourite cup nesters but true to greenfinch form they are too edgey.

Disasters

had 8 yellow siskin nests of 4-5 eggs from as many pairs with all eggs being clear what the hell..................

lost a shyte load of red zeb, blue gould and split blue gould young in the nest.

Always next year I guess
Breeding Project 2020-2025.
agate mosaic canaries, agate yellow mosaic canaries, red zebs, self bengos and goldfinch mules.

Bought my first pair of Red Zebs, but while an egg did finally get laid after I changed the types of nests available, it then vanished. Will be a little more patient, and if that does not work, switch avairys.

My low was that I had one scarlet chested parrot fledge perfectly, the other one came out too early, however I kept putting it back in the nest. Came out yesterday morning and something had killed it overnight and the meat ants had started to eat it. There is a huge meat ant nest about 6 metres from my back boundary, might have to get in an exterminator.

For Ant problems use 1 part Bi-carb soda to 1 part Icing sugar.
