Hey All,
Just wondering where everyone puts there food inside their aviary's. I have mine sitting on the floor. But last night we had a lot of rain and the food got wet. Thinking of moving it up of the ground and mounting it halfway up the wall on the side of the aviary away from where it can get wet when the rain gets driven into the aviary.
Whats your thoughts?
Cheers Daniel

Hello Daniel.
That's a good question. When I first started to keep birds, I put the bowls on the ground with similar results. Now,I have hoppers that hang on the inside of the door. They are dry there because of the safety door being under cover and the aviary fully roofed.
I reckon most of our finches love to fossick on the ground and in the wild would get most of their food that way but vermin are a problem (and wet floors!)
Btw, if your floor gets wet too much, I'd look at increasing shelter or a good-draining ground cover like sand or gravel. Birds don't like wet ground that stays wet.
Cheers

In each avairy my main food station is undercover on a raised platform that is not climbable by rodents. I still have a smaller ground based food station in 3 avairys because of quail but these are also undercover. Had to cover more of my rooves as I discovered which way the rains came from.

Thanks everyone.
Its normally pretty good when it rains. This time it was a heavy down poor, about 10mm in 20 minutes, and the wind was blowing it in from the north. Looks like I've got some work to do over the weekend.

I suspend my water and seed hoppers on thin chains fixed to the ceiling. They hang approx 2ft from the floor. I imagine that would be a good way of stopping mice, but i'm pretty stringent when building to ensure my aviaries are always completely mouse-proof anyway.
