Hi everyone, I currently have 9 zebra finches in an outdoor aviary. Hoping to add a couple of double bar finches - will it be a problem with so many zebs in there? Thanks in advance...

Hi & welcome.
If your just started in birds, then Zebs or manikins/bengalese are good ones to start with, double bars might be a problem with needing live food, the young might survive but often parents leave the young if not given enough live food, at the moment im experimenting with finches that don't need live food, Im doing ok, Ive raised 17 young recently & have lots other nests on the way.

Welcome to the forum. What size is your avairy? As this is one of the main things that will answer your question. I have breed Double Bars feeding lots of greens (if by any chance you have seeding heads with aphids on that is a bonus)

My aviary is W100 x H71 x D35 inches. I guess with a couple of breeding pairs of zebras in there, there will be aggression towards the double bars, just like there is already some aggression towards the other non-breeding/unpaired zebs. I know I should separate the breeding pairs but I don't have any other cages to breed them in. I don't necessarily want to breed the double bars - just want to add a couple of them to the flock for added variety. Am I going about it all the wrong way?

If there is already aggression adding more birds is not the best idea. Can you add another avairy? Or even a breeding cage?

First of all, welcome! :)

I would stay away from Double Bars simply because they could hybridize with the Zebra finches. Especially if you have unpaired birds in your aviary.
double bars might be a problem with needing live food
Just today I had a healthy clutch of Double Bars fledge. Parents were fed nothing but dry seed and the occasional bit of Passwell Finch Soft Food. I think the live insect requirement for this species is somewhat exaggerated.
