I have had quail in my avairy for over 30 years and very few night fright deaths. Just make the avairy so there is plenty of cover for birds to hide in. Works for me anyway, and I also have a Jack Russell to see the cats off.

How do you know its butcher birds doing the damage?

When you see the birds ripping your young apart through the wire,and attacking the young right in front of you,your pretty sure it's butcher birds,i will gently let them go a safe distance from my place,garyh

What size wire does everyone use? I have 6mm painted black with both Pied and Grey Butcherbirds and Noisy Miners in my yard and don't have any issues. I have noticed that when a wild bird does startle the finches they fly directly into the brush at the back of the aviary.
