Hi guys
I just wanted to share with everyone what made me get "into" canarys.
My wifes great uncle who has currently passed on has a massive aviary full of different types of canarys Like i mean from your rollers, fifes, border, frills, red factors etc... I seen that he loved them he sat and watched them for hours thinking whats so interesting... anyways the day came where he wasnt getting any better and was constantly in and out of hospital. He told his son to get rid of the birds he cant do them anymore, he might of kept say 4 pairs in total...Ps his son loves budgies.. not a canary person.
when i heard he was getting rid of them i just asked for 2 birds. Happened to be he gave me a pair of border canarys one is a yellow non intensive (hen) and the other more of an orange red (cock). The time i got these birds was beggining october...
the day came and sadly he oasswd away.... what i had was his birds which reminded of him everyday. The cock has a beautiful long lasting whistle. I was unaware of breeding season and how it all happens etc.. my wifes cousin asked if my birds are breeding i said no i dont even know how they breed. So he gave me a nest and potato sack material in small pieces and there same day you see the hen making a beautiful nest ive never seen before.. i observed the birds non stop straight after work for hours my wofe would be like what are you doing? I'm like have a look how the birds are mating, kissing, feeding her while shes sitting in her nes, etc... so the hen layed her very first clutch of 4 eggs and after 2 weeks i noticed 2 birds have hatched then the 3rd the ext day but the other was a dud... we had these chicks growing and theyre so beautiful and small. I was making egg biscuit and sprout seed just like a few websites were advising and after they have grown she laid again... i got into the beauty of these birds loving how i breed more beautiful canarys.. i know my wifes great uncle would be lookong over us and being proud...
And that is how i got to love these beautiful birds.
how i got started

I have a great love for Canaries, I have bred hundreds over the years, the old red factor was one my Favorites with the brilliant colour, when we lived in a flat in Sydney, I had the back enclosed verandah covered in Cages, by the time I left there the old Lino on the floor was quite red stained from the Canthaxian used to colour them.
Its good to see that your really enjoying them so much.
You will be like the rest of us soon, you will have them breeding everywhere.

Birdos love to pass on their love of birds, so the old guy would have been pleased to see your interest. Always have canaries (Glosters in my case) in my collection. Welcome to the Forum. Are you still avary breeding or have you expanded into cabinet breeding?
