Has this hybrid ever occurred in Australia?
Could they be fertile?

Hi Sam,
I've seen the same picture circulating and I think it was posted from a successful Greek breeder (not 100% sure).
I do believe they are fertile but at this stage I haven't been able to find any info regarding the hybrid being bred in Australia.
I do believe this is how they have established lutino's/albinos in Gouldians by using a lutino blue face along with the natural occurring mutation. There is a difference between the American and European albino's and this could be the difference between naturally and hybrid albinos.

Very good information Rich, i also read where that has happened. Yes Sam i have seen a hybrid of the two infact someone was trying to sell one many years ago at one of our bird sales. The cross is always a cock blue face and hen gouldian due to the rapping nature of the cock blue face.
MF was deliberately crossing BF and RF with gouldians for scientific reasons,probably to see if the the offspring are fertile to prove that the gouldian finch belonged to the parrot finch family but i don't know the outcome of this.
Off topic but i also believe that pied zebra was crossed with the closely related diamond firetail to get pied and fawn diamonds imo. Craig

I wouldn't do it deliberately either but there is always the chance of it happening if you house the two together. Randy cock blue face will rape anything. Craig

& even more chance still if you have odd birds of either species in breeding aviaries without mates or have 2 males incorrectly sexed as a pair.

I have noticed one of my BFPF constantly chasing, catching and 'attempting' to mate with a Gouldian hen over the last two days. I was not overly concerned until I read this post.

I assume I will have to obtain some more female BFPF to keep him happy.......
