I agree with those who say
1. The siskin would be best put to a siskin when 1 is available
2. The siskin now has more idea what she is doing when a siskin mate is available
3. Goldfinch mules are better singers than canarys (mine was and i have had canarys for as long as elferoz has been on the planet)
Good to see young ones like you getting involved E. As long as you spend time on breeding "pure" birds as well as the occassional dabble in Hybrids I don'e think any of us have anything to complain about. It's about preservation of species, but also about challenge and interest. If this is how you get all of that OK

I'll be at the Wollongong Finch Club meeting tonight. All are welcome - if you're game!
Maybe bring along some crosses and stakes - just in case.
Seriously though - everyone is welcome - 7:30pm Balgownie Village Community Centre, 113 Balgownie Rd, Balgownie

Proud parents.

The hen seems attentive however being her first clutch she may smother or neglect the chick. Time will tell.

Obviously. I am ever the optimist. Funny how we prefer to have an abundance of hens in regular finch breeding, but prefer cocks in mule breeding. But of course it is because of the song.

It's a hairy devil either way.

If its a hen im going to use her to foster my poorer siskin mums and goldfinch eggs.

The siskin hen feefs this little one with dedication so if it survives it will have had good training.

The goldfinch is singing like mad so he must want to put her down again. Im debating on that one ad she has had one failed nest before and may need a break.

Was inspecting the young for the first time in days. Found a little one dead in the water dish..may have been dead in shell or shortly after hatching.

The young one seems to be ok and has a strong feeding reflex.
