Okay,
Here is the story, been real slack, last years young are still in the aviary (gould). Have had some health and personal issues. Cleared out nest boxes in November. Didn't cull or sell. No nest boxes in just old shrub. Mainly goulds, but probably 10 or so painteds, stars.. had 10 or so stars, yellows and reds but now have all disappeared bar four or so. Anyhow to cut a long story short now have 12 gould chicks fledged, no boxes. Can hear chicks feeding but the cruncher is this......3 chicks, being fed by painteds. WTF. They have been my enigma over many years but I find this quite strange. Anyone had similar? Have had Stars do this on one occasion... but Painteds?
Ken.
Anyone had this?

Your Gouldians obviously think bother you, we are going to get on with this breeding business. The other, not had, but nothing surprises me much any more.

Not painteds, but have had a pair of blackthroats (one in my profile picture) incubate & raise a gouldian egg I put in their nest after replacing their own infertile eggs with dummies.

I've had Painteds (& quite a few other finch species) feed the young of others. Its usually those with the most persistent & annoying begging calls who get a regular feed this way. Painteds using a nest where Gouldians have already laid fertile eggs will also obviously bring about this result.

Probably what Tiaris said. My painteds are always moving into nests that were built then abandoned by other birds.

A little while back I had a pair of Crimsons both hen and cock take over the feeding of 4 baby Blue Face Parrot finches that had fledged 2 days prior.
1St day I noticed both the BFPF parents and the Crimsons feeding the young then the Crimsons hunting the parents away from the chicks

I've had RFPFs feed a nest of Gouldians. I swear, those were the best looking Gouldian fledglings I've ever seen! Huge and perfectly feathered. Must have been the extra protein from the RFPFs, and extra food overall as the Gouldian parents still fed them occasionally too.
I also had Zebras, of all things, feeding Gouldians just a few weeks ago. Never seen that before. Didn't turn out so well
