Everyone in the world who breeds birds that are endangered or extinct in the wild is helping. One day we may be able to reintroduce them. And if not, at least they did not go the way of their habitat.

Back to the topic though, ALL contributing factors are significant when they are noticeable contributors to the loss of habitat/species. Mining is a definitely significant contributor to loss of habitat for woodland bird species very much heightened in recent times very close to the former range of the Black-throated finch in NSW by the already fragmented distribution of that habitat and the fact that most coal mining in that neck of the woods is open-cut therefore totally obliterating whatever habitat exists in the mining area. The fact that the affected woodland species have already declined significantly and that recent & projected near-term future mines in northern inland NSW have & are springing up at an unprecedented rate even in the face of poor coal prices is very concerning. I take no comfort from any rehabilitation policies/controls after the mining as by the time the mines have finished there will definitely be no Black-throated finches & far less Diamond Firetails, Turquoise Parrots, etc, etc. to make use of any such recreated habitat. They are clear-felling mature woodland today for open-cut coal mines to use the resource for whatever period, then how long if ever will it ever become mature woodland again?
I can't fathom anyone honestly believing that mining companies are more responsible land custodians than are today's farmers - you've got to be joking.
Well said. Much more rational than my rants :)
A world without birds is a world not worth living in :)
