Our local bird club, Kempsey Macleay bird club, is considering changing their bird sale date next year. Normally conducted over the June long weekend it has become apparent that reducing numbers of sellers and buyers over the last couple of years will force the members to reconsider their options.

How do you go about choosing a new date?

The new date should also allow for climate variations in temperate, rain patterns, availability of birds to sell, pre/during/post breeding season of both finches & parrots and most importantly should not compete with another bird sale?

What are your thoughts?

Arguably the best timed bird sale in Victoria is Ballarat. It is held the first Saturday in August.

The weather and daylight hours have started to turn but breeding season is not yet in full swing. There still seems to be good numbers of birds for sale and most buyers are usually keen to find odd birds to replace winter losses or setup new pairs for the season

But in general when choosing a date you need to stay away from long weekends and special days (ie Mothers Day etc) as you cut down your available attendees who need to put family first. For similar reasons you need to assess dates being used by other clubs as most people can't attend a sale every week.

Only my thoughts

Totally agree with your thoughts Alf63 but there are bird sales in NSW around that time of the year and later for example Singleton in October which is very well attended and a good array of birds.
Al,you would need to take all of the above into consideration before you apply to the powers that be with your reasons and objections imo. Craig

Thank you Alf and Craig for your thoughts. This Sunday, 19JUN16, is the next scheduled club meeting and after the available information concerning the running of the bird show and sale is tabled at the meeting I have been told that a 'new date' will be discussed.
