HI
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if kikuyu or couch grass is safe for finches. I would like to plant some in my aviary because it grows quickly and will fill in space, but I don't want to put it in if it is toxic to the birds. I have gouldians, emblemas, canaries and quail.

both grasses non toxic to finches.
couch would be my choice of the two as it may provide some seed for them as well.
both will tend to spread and take over so keep it in check.
finches like couch "runners" to nest with also.
at least the quail will appreciate something to hide in.
good luck with them.

My finches (I have those you do and others), canaries and quail love using the couch for nesting material, and picking round the roots for small insects. Never planted it in the avairy, so I have to pull it up and place it for their use.

Useless at naming grasses myself, just go by appearances. Top one looks like one that grows wild here each winter, that my finches etc. go wild about. :snide: Bottom one looks like Kikuyu.

Top pic looks like African Veldt grass (long eared Veldt) the green seed is a bit large for smaller finches, they prefer green pannic Veldt.
The bottom pic is Kikuyu? pretty useless for seed but ok for green food. Craig

I don't know of any grasses which are not safe to use. If its a true grass - its safe.
