How is everyone's birds doing with the terrible weather in we've been having all over the country?
Right now my main aviaries are two inches deep with water, but the birds seem to be holding on okay. Only a few losses so far: two young canaries were unfortunately blown from their nest and died. A couple of freshly hatched quail have also (presumably) died, unless they happen to be very good swimmers. A star finch hen also died, but I'm not sure if that was related to the storms - she was quite old.
A few palm tree seed pods and a section of roofing from the neighbors shed luckily missed the aviaries, so no structural damage thank goodness.

Hope you get through this without too many losses, Shane. The same goes to all other birdo's in SA.

Hope the worst of the storms are over for you and others in the area Shane. And that things dry out and let you and the birds resume normal activities.

I expected the worst and instead was rewarded with 2 baby crimsons on the perch.
only bird adversely affected was a hen silver headed nun who passed a soft shelled egg this morning. hopefully everything starts to calm down now.

My saving grace are the four clear cafe blinds that i have along the front of my aviary. Each blind is 2mtr long and goes down past the top of the mouse wall. Here at Young NSW,we have had the record smashed for rainfall since records began and the rain has been coming in almost horizontally from the northwest. It is that wet, water has soaked up under my 6ocm deep concrete mouse wall and has wet my floor [very disappointed],but the birds seem to love it.My aviary is fully roofed and with the cafe blinds down,it is still warm inside on these miserable days.I would totally recommend these clear roll up blinds.Caught my male Pictorella eating a worm that had been flushed out with the wet.He has plenty of live food but must have liked the look of the wriggling earthworm.Does anybody know if earthworms are detrimental to your birds health?.On a good note,my young yellow Siskins that i purchased from a fellow AFF member have almost finished building, fingers crossed.
