We are looking to establish a branch of the Finch Society of Australia. The prime objective is to provide "Fincho's!" with a place to meet and talk finches in a social environment. Depending on the amount of interest, the initial meetings could be held in someones house, a pub or a small meeting hall and are more likely to occur south east of Melbourne. As interest grows, this can be varied with perhaps "mobile" meetings to allow more people to attend. Please add your interest in such a group within this post with a YES so that others can also gauge the level of interest.

The FSA is supportive of this move and will provide the framework for establishing the branch.

David White is the main contact in conjunction with a number of other Victorian finch breeders.

I don't want to put a damper on this expression of interest and please let me have my say without putting me down as it is an expression of interest.

It is a known fact the bird clubs are struggling to survive mainly due to social media in fact AFF is feeling the effect of the many dedicated finch sites on Facebook.
My own branch of the Avicultural society of Australia in Geelong has all but shut down due to poor attendance and probably a little in fighting at a guess as i haven't attended a meeting for some years due to family health commitments.

It is all good to say that this new branch of the FSA will be held in the SE of Melbourne but what happens to all the other Victorian finch breeders that live vast distances from where the meetings are going to be held.
The original hype of having to attend meetings of this new finch club will/might slowly degenerate due to weather or just plain i can do all this online.
Financial commitment is another concern and so is Insurance,it's all out there to test you and it could become a nightmare but you don't know unless you try it i suppose.
I'm trying not to be a pessimist but have ago if you think it will all work, and i hope it does but don't just let it turn into a local boys club.
All in my opinion but the internet is ruling the roost.

Personal opinion, NO.
Fragmentation of the possible members in Victoria will only weaken all clubs or branches.
Today most Victorian ASA branches are struggling, maybe those obviously not happy with the current situation should
get involved with existing clubs and branches and assist in their improvement.
I think the Finch Society of Australia should stay in NSW

My opinion is,The Finch club struggles, as 50% of the meeting covers discussion on Parrots!!
and not finches!If the new finch club covers finches,then yes it should be successful.

In my opinion, we should support all clubs and all ideas to promote aviculture.

Here we have a group of finch enthusiasts who want to begin a specialist finch club in the country's second largest city. There is plenty of room for such a club. Look at Wollongong and Hunter, much much smaller population and both have a highly successful general avi club, together with a finch club.

The FSA was asked, and is pleased to be offering its support to get the ball rolling. Initially (or forever) it may be nothing more than an informal get together of people with a shared interest or it may grow into a more formal club. Can't hurt to get on board the ride and see where it leads.

Enthusiasm and support makes things happen.

im a member of my local branch of the asa, which I have no intention of leaving . Like George commented, more than 50% of its members are into parrots. Having a local finch only club would be great.
