These seem to be my last few days as a finch keeper.
I had 3 ruddies, a longtail, and a pair of cordons escape today. I got only the ruddies back.
So basically, I give up.
I'll probably hang around here though. I'm thinking about going into ducks or something.
last few days

You know that you never give up! Prior to 2007 I had not kept finches since 1981 but I never stopped wanting to keep them - it's just that the opportunity didn't arise and I figured that if you delayed gratification too long the only winner would be the grim reaper. I hope that you find satisfaction quickly but don't give up on the finches yet - I'm sure you've got some ideas on how to escape proof and mouse proof aviaries. There are many worth-while forms of aviculture, a few that make and break your heart, keeping poultry can end up a multi-million dollar business and here in the Philippines stapping a 10cm knife to a rooster's leg and watching it stab another to death is considered family entertainment. I'm not too keen on keeping raptors either but if somoneone can breed them and exercise them I suppose there are solutions for my objections too. Keeping and breeding watrer fowl will have it's challenges too - now you'll really need a lot of space.

So sorry to hear about your bad luck Jay. "When life hands you lemons make lemonade" It means always look on the bright side. If as I seem to recall you are due to or have just moved house, maybe this is lifes way of saying take a break, be happy with what you have for 3-6months, then shake yourself and decide what to do. Look forward to continuing to read your posts.

Hang in there mate.I know these things are very upsetting but that is life & more so keeping birds.
When I met you I thought to myself " this young bloke is one of the keenest & most knowledgeable person on finches I have met at his age".
When you settle down & get your cage etc built or fixed up I will replace your cordons for you free of charge because we cannot afford to loose people with your keenness for finches to breeding "ducks"
Look on the bright side They could have been BLUECAPS
(KEEP IN TOUCH)

Jay, real sorry to hear about your problems. Please don't give up on keeping finches and do remain enthusiatic. I have learnt a lot from your posts and it would be a real shame to loose that knowledge base and if there is anything I can do to help you get your mojo back please PM me at any time. Life is full of knocks and I have had my own share and it is very important that you push through these learning experiences. At 12 you have a long way to go so don't let these events sour you this early.
Please note the post from Southy as he is dead right about how you come across in person, don't loose that.
Cheers and keep the chin up.
