Gouldian Young

Can anyone please help. My gouldian finches have had young. They are now of the age that the parents no longer incubate at night. They still only have skin with no down or feather covering. Last night was cool, and I lost one of the babies over night! Is there anything I can do to prevent baby birds dying in an aviary on the cooler nights? Would appreciate anyone help. Thankyou Pauline

Hi Pauline, The parents should still be sitting on them, are they feeding them still. I don't know of any way of heating them in the avairy, unless you hand rare them inside. WELCOME TO THE FOURM PAULINE.

you could maybe put a heat lamp under the box thats all wat i can suggest other than wat greg sugested.and also welcome to the forum

With the heat lamp, can they run on batteries, How do I get the to work in an outside aviary? Thanks

I don't know if you will get one that will run on batteries, the other is to run a power leal to the avairy from the house if possible and use a heat lamp with a glob around 45 watt

yes wat greg said but make sure you put small wire from the globe hlder up to the box and away from the globe so the birds cant touch it other wise they will get burnt

Sorry to hear about your lose.As the others said,keep the aviary warm.is there any cold wind coming in?Can you stop it.If the parents are young, sometimes it takes a couple of goes to work it all out.Some unexperianced parents lose a nest or two.If you have some others with young, you could put the chicks in with another nest.If you think they are going to be lost,or you dont want to risk it.

The nests are high up in the roof area of the aviary, so there should not be too much breeze. The only other nest that I have on the go at the moment that have young at the moment are Zebs & Bengalese. Would I be better in trying to move the young to get them fostered?
