If there of the same age or size that would be great and try to do this early in the day so you can keep an eye on them during the day to make sure they are being feed

Its your choice,Ideally you would foster them, when you first notice them dying,or being chucked.If you have not lost anymore in the morning i personally would leave them.If you have lost another then you have to decide.Do you leave them there as gunie pigs for the parents to learn(assuming its bad parenting thats the problem)Or put them in with the banglenese,and hope they dont get tosed from there.
Are there crops full?they should be.

Hi Pauline, I just lost 3 goulds a few days ago in the same situation as yours, hen finished sitting at night, and the temp was really cold. all 3 persished in the one night, a heat lamp would help, i have a blind i can roll down, but that night i did'nt. not sure if it would have made any differnce.

There crops are still full, so im guessing they died very early in the night.

I assume the gouldian hen leaves the nest around 10 days or so because thats what has been built into them living in warmer climites? they can leave the nest and rely on the weather being warm to keep the young alive?? what do othes think?

Hey Jarryd sorry to here of your loss, my gouldians stay with the babies pretty much till they fledge, are your birds young, i haven't had this trouble before or they could simply not be good parents or they might be getting disturb at night.

Hi Greg, so what your saying is the hen sits on the babies for neally the whole 24 days in the nest at Night??, iv never herd that before, My hens never stay that long.

The Pair are 2 years old. Did'nt breed last year, this was their 2nd attempt as the first eggs got cooked in the heatwave. Iv never had chicks tossed and i would'nt say their bad parents birds were well fed and cared for. don't think they got spooked either, cause in my gouldian hens they allways sleep outside of the nestbox well before they fledge.

Does anyone else on here have hens that don't sit everynight till fledging?
Or do your hens stay neally every night in the nest till about to fledge?

Very Curious.

I guess that there are difference in what they do, i have a cock bird that has done all the feeding and sits on them at night and the babies are 2 weeks this Sunday, and i had a hen in another cage that sat nearly full term, i would like to here other peoples comments to see what there birds have done.

I have seen a heat lamp made from two terracotta pots with the hole in the base of one pot enlarged to fit a lamp through it. once the lamp is in place use duct tape to connect the two pots together. the ones I saw were 6" pots with a 75 watt globe inside. the birds can actually sit on these and not get burnt. the terracotta also seems to hold the heat well .

Hi Greg, unfortunately I lost my full nest of babies. I had a second nest also that I was keeping an eye on & in one night i lost 2 babies, so I now have them fostered under bengalese & they are doing beautiful. With my pairs I have never had any incubate after 10days of age. I also found this fact published in the Russell Kingstons finch book. Is it best that at this time of year that I remove my nests, but the what happens with birds that like to roost in nest over night? Cheers Pauline
