Just thought I'd find out what seed mixes everyone uses, as it has been a while since I put somesort of effort into finches. I have been mixing my own for my Parrots for year, as well as the finches, as I found most commercial mixes to be nothing but white and yellow panicum, with a bit of canary, red, & jap thown in to make it look good.

The basis for all of my mixes is equal parts of canary, white, & jap, And for the finches one equal part red. For the parrots I add 2parts sunflower, 1 part safflower, & one part of oats or wheat.

I also feed to the finches, equal parts maw, linseed & niger, with when I have them, green panic and the cassurina seed. This is only feed in small quantities, allong with the usual suspects, E&B with harb boiled egg, wombaroo Insectavore, termites, and a few mealworms.

Any suggestions.

looks like a good brew to me.My dry seed mix is about 33% canary , red and yellow panicum 33%,french millet 25% about 10% jap millet. Then a scoop of tonic mix for every five kilos of seed, being the tonic mix from nutri wing with a little rye grass added. All coated with codliver and breeding aid this time off year.
with some maggots given ocassionally mealworms, chited seed (just ordered birds r us white mix to try)And also will try some complete soft food to try.

Just the basic finch mix in the feed hopper . Then in separate bowls Linseed , Red Panicum and Insectivore . Then greens , egg , madiera , toast you know whatever is available.
Mix of chell grit , charcoal , eggshells and cuttlebone all mixed together in another feeder.

I mix my own aswell which basically consists of

900g white millet
900g red pannicum
300g jap
450g canary
300g rye
150g niger

plus use mike fidlers recipe for softfood.

will be reducing the niger tho as when i clean the seed tray i find there is some thrown out.
have also added 150g of linseed and 150g of poppy seed to see how that goes.

I have just mixed different quantities together over time too see how much gets left over and find this is working ok for me.

Thats why I put the extra seeds in bowls , if they don't eat it I wont waste money buying it . Even the neophemas have been tucking into the linseed ...amazing how they know what they need (omegas).
