I sold two pair of Star finches yesterday (March 24) at the Cartimar market for P800 a pair (~AUD$19). I was quite happy with that; although the adults retail for P3000 +(~AUD$72) if you're buying. I was even more happy with my cut-throats. I brought the parents there two years ago for P2000/pr (~AUD$48) and that's what I sold their progeny for and I dare say they will be offered for at least twice that. Filipinos don't seem to be able to sustain anything other than Zebs, Stars, Gouldians, Hecks, Doubble bars, Societies and Java sparows. Occasionally there are Masked and Diamond Firetails so maybe I should concentrate on them but I want them all and more!

The Cartimar market isn't great for finches but there are some psitticine gems getting through. Yesterday for instance there was a pair of some red lories (Eos sp is as close as my knowledge goes) for P12000/pair (~AUD$288). Of course I didn't buy but it must be tempting for those that way inclined. Of course they were illegally smuggled from Indonesia and occasionally the guys get caught (seehttp://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insi ... february/8).

Hi Greg, are you still in Philippines? I was wondering have you ever seen a specie native to Philippines by the name of Mountain Serin (Serinus estherae) at the markets. I have never ever heard or seen anyone keeping this specie anywhere in aviculture and neither have I seen a photo of this specie. There are three subspecies scattered throughout Indonesia, the only reference I have is from the Clenets/Harris/Davies "Finches and Sparrows".

Just got back from Sydney this evening. I haven't seen the bird in question but it is on the oriental Bird Images site (http://orientalbirdimages.org/search.php?Bird_ID=1961). Given their love of canaries here I wouldn't mind betting that somone have tried to get hold of it but I'm not actually aware of anyone who has but I do tend to not think outside the Estrillidadae. I will ask around and see what happens.

Thanks Greg, would be good to know their status in captivity in Philippines or has anyone bred them at all!
