Lost another fledgeling this morning, she was about 2 months out of the nest , so I'm starting to get depressed. I think I'm doing most things right and still have around 50 fledglings.
But it's still sad losing any bird.

Framed.

Framed yes it is depressing , but just think the survivors will be contributing to a good stock of birds tough enough to take the cold.
Guess we should start a post about who is surviving the cold might be less depressing than who didnt survive.

Coming into the cold weather I start to feed the larger finches budgie mix with plenty of canary seed in it and hulled oats. It helps to put a bit of fat on the finches to help get them through the cold winters.

Bad news. My trainee environmental scientist tells me that global warming means it will get hotter in the summer days and colder in the winter nights from now on. So I guess we will have to make our avairys more adaptable and watch the strong survive. Lost a Diamond Dove overnight. But the extra canary seed seems to be helping everyone else to keep warm enough. It was very wet and windy last night, near cyclonic winds.

I asked about hulled oats at the local bird place and was told they were too big for the gouldians. Could they be ground down a bit and sprinkled over their normal seed? I did get some hemp seeds, was told they have the most carbs. Cant say Ive seen anyone eating them yet.

I prefer hulled sunflower,I chuck them in a blender for a minute and add to soaked seed when I feed.(Only leading up to and during Winter)They even eat the big pieces.

My gouldians ate them in the 80's......my Black throats will try them but hardly any get past the Blue faced parrot finches......try them & if they dont go for 'em, grind them up & sprinkle them through egg & biscuit or chitted seed

Theres quite a few high fat omega 3 seeds small enough for finches without having to muck around grinding seeds ...Niger , Linseed , Lettuce ,Hemp and Rape to name a few.
