For someone who has not been that fussed on birds, other than finding them pretty, I am in love with the OB waxbills I saw yesterday!!! They are tinier than I thought, and their backs seem more colourful than pictures I have seen (which seem mainly green, the ones I saw had blue as well). They were the cutest thing I have ever seen, can't wait to get them!!! :P Have never felt this way about anything that wasn't four legged and furry, but those little guys really got to me! they are so beautiful.

They are cuties for sure , I love the way they will snuggle up together , my pair were joined at the hip until I lost the girl . He has been put in with a pair of ruddies ( other fire finches from Africa ) and it is amazing from the word dot they all snuggle up tight.
And yes the colour is awesome , what is there not to like about them ? :D

love em - their little chirps are so cute, as are they themselves. Be careful though, they are escape artists!

Thanks for the warning Jayburd. We have safety door on the aviary, and will padlock it to stop kids from opening aviary.

ahh, good.
I remember, when selling my old house, I had to stand guard every open day to make sure no toddlers (and many tried) to open my aviary doors and get at the "pretty birdies"
a lot of people were disappointed that the aviary didn't come with the house either - apparenty they wanted to keep some "little birds" they had seen at the local pet shop - good, new people! but when It came to the point when someone asked if my orange breasts were allowed out of the aviary for excersise each day, and began to lecture me when I said no, I kind of bought a padlock and went inside.

O/B are certainly one of the smallest and most beautiful of finches. But very easily get out of the smallest spaces. Mine have always been the ones most inclined to fly over my shoulder into the safety cage. So always check that it is empty before opening the outside door. And when transporting them in a small cage make sure it is the type with square wire not slats. Remember catching my young up to sell and putting them in a slat wire cage and turning round to catch the next etc. When I caught the 8th of the 5 young .................. :?: Yes they had been sliding sideways out between the slats.
