Thanks everyone. Interesting to see what others do. Obviously we all have different situations and need to treat accordingly. I treat for cocci regularly during my breeding season. I am fortunate to have the warm weather, but it comes with its own problems I suppose. I have a spacious aviary, but with a planted dirt flight area that is exposed by 1/3rd to wild birds, so it is purely preventative. I treat for protozoa too now as I had a new bird bring it in as a carrier. It went through my usual quarantine period without showing signs of anything. Now the little microscopic bugger is in the aviary and can hang around for many months dormant, I do a preventative too. Never want to see many of my birds waste away and die again for no reason. Lost my Peter Twinspots and just about all my young for that season because of it.
Everytime I speak to breeders in my area with more experience I get more worried. We get Avian TB in our area too apparently. I don't want to OD my birds on preventative meds either, so I am just going to be keeping my eyes open for any abnormalities.

Is that the preventative or the cure? Cause I know there is one medication to prevent cocci and one to cure the birds once they have it. And If you do get it. Remove the birds from the avairy, remove topsoil to at least 10cm, and sterilaze the ground by burning with blowtorch (hot flame) then put in clean topsoil and away you go. Remembering to scrub down all avairy walls and replace all perches (burn old ones) before burning the ground.

After reading these replies I'm wondering do I need to treat for coccidiosis in Perth? My aviary has a cement floor, but my chook pen doesn't and I wear the same boots when I'm in and out of both of them. Having trouble demystifying the whole worm treatment regime as there don't seem to be many places in Perth to buy them from. Bought some Avitrol Plus and then read that it wasn't suitable for Gouldians. None of the local vets have any thing but have tracked down some at Wattle Grove Vet called worm gel that treats a variety of worms. Am hoping to take a run out there today so if anyone could help I'd be grateful
