At the sales I have been paying attention to the display boxes and I noticed the predominant colour is black. As I have seen others with grey or white display cages its obviously not mandatory to have black. Is there a colour that would cause the birding fraternity to point and stare or whisper behind their hands if someone came in with a display cage in say.....blue or yellow?

The reason Im asking is below.

My first thought was  Oh! I will have to repaint that, but then I was thinking a colour that was different to everyone else might not be a bad thing.

I intend to cover the floor with fake grass and have been thinking about putting in those battery operated led lights (cheapo ones from the supermarket)
Any thoughts, anyone?

I think the black and white just came across from show cages to witch there are rules. When I built my sale cages I fell into that way off thinking without even thinking. Can't see anything wrong with your plans, the thing that turns me from buying birds I want at sales is cleanliness. Dirty disgusting cages to me means birds aren't looked after properly at home.Good pics though.

Ive just installed the grass and I think its starting to look a little too colourful and Im leaning towards giving it a coat of black paint.

Looks good to me. Be different, then people can say I bought them from the lady with the colourful cages and they have turned out great. And recommend you, and no one will have trouble remembering you.

I think the boxes the birds are judged in are made to certain requirements but the boxes for sale of birds are much less formal , Ive seen all manner of home made boxes in the country shows . They may be a bit more hoity toity in the big smoke , not that it matters .
Up to you Di , I cant see anything wrong with them .

Sale Boxes
The main points are : The cage MUST BE CLEAN I will not buy a bird from a scruffy dirty cage.
If they have dirty sale cages who knows what their set up is at their home.
The cage needs to be designed to allow as much light in to show off the bird
Do not use open roofed cages because the birds become stressed and do not look at their best
for the buyers.I will not sell a bird to anyone who uses a wire canary type cage to transport birds; period!!!
Surely people can pay $10 and buy a proper carrying box which are sold at bird sales.

Colour used for boxes, we have experimented with various internal colours, the two colours which really highlighted the birds
were a pale pink and a pale yellow, but in the end we have stuck with just ordinary white.

One of the biggest assets we have on our sale boxes is that we have a material sleave to put your hands through
when we open the door to catch the birds. The sleave is far safer than a soft rubber flap especially if you have more than one bird in the box.
Because the sleave is so safe we do not need to leave our area and go to the safety catching cage.

If you only go to an occasional sale then just make sure the box is clean and the birds can be easily seen.

Absolutely, I wont buy from dirty looking cages either. Just buying trouble I reckon if you do that.

Well I have installed some LED lights, just the stick on ones, battery operated. That will see me through the first sale I go to.
Then I will reassess, I reckon I could get the son-in-law to hook up some kind of light system and a chunky battery if I need to.

I once saw someone buying Gouldians, putting them in a finch nest box bought at the sales table, with his hand over the entrance. Disgusting. The guy (good on him) refused to sell the gouldians to him.
