Finally got a shot of the Scarlets and so now can anyone tell me if they are Normal , Red Fronts or Red Bellies . Closest I could get to the boy without him running back to the nest box Soz.

I'm pretty sure hens have no red at all.

as for normal, or RF, I'm for red fronted. Normals have a yellow belly, but the bird may have one, It's a bit dark, no offense.

by the way, would it be OK to house scarlets in a cage about 1.3 x 80cm x 70cm? just the one breeding pair... nestbox on the outside...

looks like a highly coloured normal now.

Those look more like hens - is there a possibility there is an immature male hidden in there somewhere?

That's way more red & more intense than I've seen in a hen, normally you would get one or two flecks, not even full feathers. Might be worth holding on to the young till they colour up, just incase. Looks like a Red Bellied cock to a "normal" or should I say "abnormal" hen, Full Red-Fronted and Red Bellied are the same, recessive inherited colour, but some exhibit more even red from chest to vent than other, so some breeders call them differnt names depending on the degree of colour they possess.

Are you absolutely sure that the picture you have presented is of your breeding female.
Without hesitation all parrot keepers would call it a cockbird.
I know old hens with hormone problems will take on basic male colouration or melanistic feather colour but not to the extent your bird shows.
To me it looks just like a young cockbird comming into his first adult plumage.
If it is a hen you have a really amazing bird.

Oh god I got that sinking feeling when I read your post poiita !!! Would they still be sharing the nest box if I did ? March - August would account for sudden colouration in a young male wouldnt it !
Now what do I do ???
