Hi everyone.
As this is only my second year of breeding finches, I am still learning all the tricks of the trade, which I might say is half the fun. I'm also working out where to obtain things needed for my aviaries for each breeding season.. I was lucky enough last year to find someone advertising bags of Swamp Grass for sale, and bought 3 large bags from him of which I still have some left for next year. But he has informed me that he is unable to supply some this year. So I am trying to find out who else supplies this, or what everyone else does? I'm willing to go in search out west if necessary.. Or what alternatives are there? I keep mainly Gouldians, with Painteds, Stars and a pair of Orange Breasted Waxbills as well.
Any info would be helpful.. Cheers

Yeah I have seen it in small bags here as well, but I thought that was the expensive way to buy it.. And my birds go through it big time..jusdeb wrote:I get mine from the local pet shop.
I must have finches that build high rise nests... ;)

I got a heap from a farm belonging to someone my grandparents were farm - sitting for.
HEAPS of it there. If you like I can fix you up with some at the sale. I only brought home a little bit though, and since i'm currently finch - less... I don't really have a need for most of it.

Hey thanks heaps for that offer.. but you will want it someday. I do have some here at the moment, I was just researching for the future. I might even investigate getting some seed and growing a bit in containers.Jayburd wrote:I got a heap from a farm belonging to someone my grandparents were farm - sitting for.

Swamp Grass grows well here along the Murray River area. It is generally harvested around Christmas depending on how hot it is.
The grass grows in shallow Billabongs which are just slightly filled, when the water evaporates the bottom becomes a covered bright green crop.
As the water disappears the grass dries and is racked up.
It is also harvested in the Hunter Region and I think sold per bag.
It is one of if not the best nesting grass you can use.
