Well think about the life of a caged bird mate ....what is there but eat , sleep , poop and reproduce and none of these are possible without correct diet and shelter.
Whilst waiting to restock do some serious research on the needs of caged birds throughout all phases of life ie. normal function , breeding season , surviving the cold and moulting .
It is not cheap to keep birds well nourished but with some clever gardening and scrounging you can provide the fresh food .
Nothing is wasted here all leftover vegies are kept for the birds , old wholemeal bread is toasted , apple cores you name it and if its fresh then the birds will likely eat it ....
supermarket seeds are old and polished to look good and thats all , they have very little nutritional value so you are actually wasting your money feeding them bulk amounts of crap seed .
You will need to source a seed supplier that has a big turnover so the seed is always reasonably fresh.
Give the birds a good diet and they should thrive.

Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Exactly... People have to consider what conditions they set the birds in.. and think if that is the best they can provide...jusdeb wrote:Well think about the life of a caged bird mate ....
I think I supply mine with fresh food, clean water every day, a routine of medical treatments to keep them healthy... and then sit back and think what else I can do.. thats why I come on here and see what other people think.. If we want to admire the birds for what they are, provide the best and then you will get good results.. (end of my rant...)

perhaps shanny prior to gettng your next birds, give some general information to the forum about how your going to house the birds, what feed your going to use, and number of birds, there are many experienced finch breeders online that can give you the right advice for initial set up. nothing worse than seeing a bird suffer, usually its something very basic that is being done wrong
