I won't do another 10 minute spiel.
Cut Throats (Amadina Fasciata), in the family Amadina, along with the Red Headed Finch (Aberdeen Finch) from Africa.
Need a reasonable size aviary if being housed with other birds. they may get along with zebras and gouldians, but a careful eye must be kept on them.
They require some shelter, but are relatively hardy
They will do better if the aviary is planted.
They mostly require live food when breeding (mealworms, maggots, termites)
They are notorious for taking over other bird's nests, though I reckon this is dependant on the personality of the birds themselves.
There's lots of info in Russell Kingston's new book, "The Finch - a breeder's companion", so if you can find a copy its great.

Shanny2,

Sorry cutthroat lovers, my opinion stay away from cutthroats until you get a bit more experience, yes they do breed well once they start but as jayburd stated unless you have the right size aviary, they can be aggresive to other finches. Why don't you start with something like star finches, they are hardy, compatible, breed well and have a nice colour. You are better off learning with finches that are easier to look after, than spending money and causing stress to birds.

Yep Sorry Shanny but the Zebs didnt do too well for you , you need to gain experience before taking on more difficult species . Us beginners need a beginning . :D

Good starter birds would include. Zebs, Canarys, Painteds, Orange bresteds. All should be fed on a mix of dry and green seeds. And are going to want egg and biscut mix at least to feed their chicks. But you can learn like I and many others have had to with these species. And if you are like me get so fond of the little tikes that you still have them. :D
