Hi, my brother had a bad week last week, we think butcherbirds or currawongs got at his birds, lost 4 double bars, 2 RFPF and a longtail, birds were dead inside avairy on the floor, but not necessarily near the wire? or in the flight.
Had feathers plucked(?) or rubbed off (on wire?) off the chest/breast and one had mangled head, otherwise in prefect condition, cant think what else it could be- happened over two days.
If it was, they must be quick to get a bird through the wire?
We have put shade cloth up as a deterent, hopefully all will be ok.
Other finches ok, Emblemas and a pair of scarlets still on eggs - so dont think it was a cat as you would think that everything might have been stirred up?.

He has had this avairy for 4 years without any worries, just one of those days we put down to experience.

Sorry to hear about the losses.

It could be that some of the birds died as a result of being in a panic and hit a wall or the wire.

Things are always changing , new birds , new territories . We have the misfortune of having hawks now in the paddocks across the road even though the finches probably wont attract them to the yard the loud mouth Quarrions will have them here for sure . :(
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

I can sympathise with him, I lost 4 pair in a week, now I cant buy finches anywhere. Should be some around soon hopefully.

Sorry to hear that. The shade cloth is a good idea.
