Last night at about 3, maybe 3.30 am I heard a sound reminiscent of a cat being slaughtered. A sort of fear-and-panic-filled screech. Right outside my bedroom window.
It could have been a bird, but no feathers to indicate a kill, and no cat fur anywhere. I don't know HAT it could have been, but it's sorta freaking me out right now. anyone had something like this happen to them?

no, just one noise and no noise of cat fight. No signs of fight either, and since the ground's still pretty wet I think a scuffle would show up.
There have been possums around, but it didn't sound like them. It definitely came from BELOW the window (so about 1m or less)

Cats fighting over territory ? Cats mating ? Feral cat ? or some paranormal apparition coming to take the soul that was sold to it in exchange for exotic finches ?

no, I've heard powerfuls (and seen them :D) and certainly not that. more like a screech than a deep hoot.
anyway, I don't know. but it definitely came from the ground and was very loud (woke me up)
also Powerful Owls very rarely enter Canberra, the first in 50yrs came to the botanical gardens last year (or 2008, I forget)

What you've got there is probably a fox. The buggers make some of the creepiest noises around.
