Tri Colour Parrot Finch

I was just reading a book on parrot finches by Evans & Fidler published in 1990. The brief description of the tri-coloured parrot finch says little is known about the species and it is unknown to aviculture. As far as I was aware, there haven't been any legal imports into Australia for nearly 50 years. Does anyone know the history of how this bird came to be in our aviaries. They would have to be considered a success story regardless of their origin.

if you ask mr fidler. all the so called tri coloured in oz are are actually tanimbar, they look very simmilar but are differnt. when i find which mag has an article by mike fidler in explaing the differnce i will get back to you..pete

Tricolour, Tanimbar, Forbes, same species just from different regions. Not sure if they are even classed as sub species. Irrespective of the name, it would appear to me that they have found their way here illegally. Given Australia's close proximity to Indonesia I wouldn't be surprised if a few sneaky imports made their way in.

Do you think this book is worth the $30 to $50 is is currently list on online? There was a fairly unfavourable review on the site i was looking at.

I think I paid something similar for my copy and I certainly don't regret it, so I guess in my opinion it is worth it. I seem to be a collector of any finch book I can find though. A lot of the info in the book is outdated and you can find more current and better information in other areas but there is still plenty to be learnt from it.

All the same bird

Forbes was at one point though a new sub species not any more

you do get a few thwt are brighter Blue

you also now get see Green (shame)

lovely little birds & probably the easiet to breed
must be easier if i can breed them

the book referd to earler is very outdated
there is a coupl of very very good books now available by the Dutch breeder Tony Jochem
with lovely sections on breeding parrot finches
