is it a good idea to grow my own seed?

certainly is! but its hard to grow enough for you to use all the time, so i just grow some to use the green seed heads, i don't usually let them ripen fully. all they need is water too, easy as pie!

is i grow seed and they get ripe if i cut the tops of will they grow again because i am going to start today and how do i know if i have good seed?

it should regrow somewhat yes shanny, but some species will die each year i think (annual grasses). you'll know you have good seed if it starts growing within the first few days or a week. also, ive noticed that seeds planted no deeper than a couple of centimetres grow best...
