Just a tribute to my very special friend, Skinnipeep the hand tame quail.
He is the male who had fathered the eggs I wrote about in my earlier topic (quails have eggs again).
I found him dead on the cage floor with a massive lump on his head, and yup you guessed it a currawong standing next to the cage.
So RIP my favourite ever and best-loved quail :cry: :cry: :cry:

Went to feed his mate some lettuce and she looked very lost.

yes he certainly as a cutie, especially just after he hatched! he was always tame and would always have a go at something new to eat or play on and he would often jump up on my lap in the aviary when I sat down :)

well they're not native to this area, so that'ss all I need to be able to trhow loose small clumps of dirt at them :hothead:
It is entirely my fault though :( I need to come up with a way to stop this.

Can you fasten a layer of alsonite or heavy plastic about 30cm wide along the bottom edge of the avairy/cage? I know this will only protect what is on the ground, but this is often when they are most vulnable.

I do have plastic sheeting over the front and sides of the cage, and the back is against a wall and the top covered with blankets.
However, these last few night I've been leaving it open so I can get them used to being in the outdoor aviary when it goes up, and not die of cold.
so that was probably it.
