Its all true. Zebs are the same , normal - split = normals and splits, split to split = normals, colours and splits. More likely to be an average over a few clutches because you aint going to get 50% from 1,3, 5, 7, or 9 young. Thats why you need to try and put a colour- normal pairing then you know they will all be splits.
Breeding Show Zebra Finches, Blue Gouldians, Pied Orange Breast.

I know very little about genetics, but i thought that
gouldianpaul wrote:normal to a split bird
would produce 100% visually normal birds and that 25% of the birds would be split, not

As a Genetics nut I can assure you that Normal to split = 50% of each. HOWEVER That is on percentages! Exactly the same as by the same rules if you flip a coin you will get 50% heads and 50% tails. NOW get a coin, think of heads as Normal and tails as split and try it. The more often you do it the more correct it will be. So if you could breed 100 chicks it would work. But as you can't get that number of chicks from your pair before they peg out of old age. You will get something in the general range. And yes the split to split is 50% split, 25% Normal and 25% recessive. 20 plus years of keeping and breeding and 40 plus years round parents who keep and breed and the rules have always been the same. Genetics is wonderful it is never wrong, and seldom right.
