Nest raiding.

Yesterday i found 4,10 day old Sea Green parrot finch babies on the floor of the aviary. Thrown out by something. They looked uninjured so i quickly cleaned them up & put them back in the nest box. The parents went straight back into the nest. I sat & watched the nest & after 5 minutes a pair of gouldians chased the parents away & went into the nest & were about to start on the babies again. I was shocked. I quickly caught that pair of gouldians and all other gouldians in that aviary also & put them in a holding aviary.
I checked my breeding records from last breeding season & found that pair of gouldians had raised 2 lots of young in that same nest box. I can only think they wanted their nest box back so they could start breeding again. They are not yet in breeding condition. Far too early for breeding season in my books but i should of seperated them before now i guess. I didn't think gouldians had a mean bone in their body.
I have checked the babies several times & all is well so far. Tough little buggers.

I had that same problem but didnt have the Gouldians it was the RF Cock plus biting at the young but were always dead on the floor. As your Gouldians going to nest my first time really breeding them and they will be Blues i caught 2 pairs courting each other today and yesterday and both were started by the hen calling and tail flicking, so i dont know if they are ready or not. You would think its to early. But i guess when they are ready and its right what do you do? They may go or they may wait.

My gouldians have not completely finished their moulting as yet & i feel the hen birds are not yet ready because the beaks are still red tipped. They should be a dark blackish colour. The next couple of months will be too hot for breeding. Early February should be right.

AMCA26, i let my goulds try to breed last season when they thought they were ready. Nearly lost the hen to egg binding. I'd make sure the blues are well and truely in season before encouraging them to go to nest

Yes i will be waiting until late Jan early Feb, i was just surprised with the hens making the first move. :thumbup:
