I know this is a slightly pointless topic on a finch forum

What are all your views on this topic? which do you prefer? why?
This is something I've been thinking about a lot recently. As a person who loves both, I know perfectly well a decision without slight regret is impossible but what are the views of others?

Love all birds , but love my hand reared parrots most of all for the sheer character .
Love watching the finches , always busy .
Love watching birds in the wild .
I just love birds .

Jayburd you remind me so much of myself when i was younger it makes me laugh.I love all birds too but i dont keep parrots for a few reasons.A lot of parrots only have one or two clutches per season, noise levels, destruction of aviary plants and if i kept them i would love to keep them in large aviaries. How big are you building your aviary ? If you have enough room maybe you could consider both although many people advise against it.I kept Scarlet Chested for awhile and they were fine with finches in reasonable size aviary.I did notice though the young Scarlets would camp at night on finch nests so they had to go.I think the best thing about finches is you can keep a few different species in one aviary, there active, colourful and a lot species arent hard to breed.A lightly stocked finch aviary and worry about parrots later.if you can get termites (and heaps of them) why not just try one pair of blue caps ? seems like you love those. With no competition and plenty of live food theres no reason you couldnt breed a few.

thanks deb and desert,
haha bluecaps - in my opinion the most beautiful bird ever to exist. But as I have been constantly reminded I must have red cheeks first

Why not just buy a few pairs of red cheeks and make a start on your goal to keep Blue Caps.Dont put anything else in there and just give it a real good go.You can do it .Your like me and want heaps of different species but competition in a little aviary makes it hard.

I'm thinking of restricting my collection to red cheeks and red strawberries, then blue caps and grenadier weavers.

Well I keep finches because I love them. I find most parrots too noisy and as most are larger birds, I would want to keep them in larger aviaries than I can afford. That said I do have 1 pair of hanging parrots but I don't think I do them justice but they are quiet, they don't chew on everything and they haven't stopped my Java sparrows or cut-throats from breeding but I'm not sure that works the other way around!
