No I'm not changing from a finch addict to parrots.
These guys belong to the other half and live in her shadehouse.
Picked them up in adelaide yesterday.
Great looking birds that have already made themselves at home.
not to much noise (yet)

if anyone has any hints or tips in regard to keeping these birds pls pass them on.

will post pics when I can remember how to download from the camera :roll:

Beautiful little birds , only tip I have is to get them onto Vetafarm Lorry Pellets ....no more wet food , dry foods and best of all no more runny poops ...

This I have been told by a few people as Im sussing out Lorries myself ...

much the same as all the other larger lorikeets,but alot quieter. My pair used to love sultanas. Will settle very well & can become tame enough to take food from your hand, but be warned, even hand reared they will become vampires, of the thiry or so I breed, every one of them would draw blood. But apart from that they are a beautiful bird that deserve more popularity.

Beaut bird, as VR1Ton said, not so sexy, but very worthy........I'm on the lookout to complete my small Aussie lorri collection...........I'm not keen on the Vetafarm pellets, our birds wouldnt take them.....might be a different type though........all our lorris get a pretty rich home-made dry mix modified from a few people I've spoken to............

1 part rice flour
1 part rice bubbles...or rice meal like Farex but thats expensive!
1 part fruit muesli
1 part sustagen
1 part milk powder
1 part raw sugar
1 part dextrose
1 part egg & biscuit

whack in the blender til nice and fine and well mixed........depends on the birds taste on any given day but one pair of muskies would probably eat about the same as our Scaley or Varieds..........one to two tablespoons a day...roughly

We make a wet mix of essentially one part of the above mix with a tablespoon of honey and frozen peas, one to two parts warm water, then mix well and pour into an ice cube tray..........I feed one ice cube in the evening to breeding pairs in breeding seaon......the others get one every now & then as a treat.......in the arvo as this is cooler and if there's any left in the morning it wont have spoiled like it would if left through the day....important to keep Lorri food clean, probably moreso than finches but I guess you'd know that

Main food focus for my birds though is the morning fruit run.......good wedge of apple or anything really per pr........our Varieds demolish red paw paw

Oh, and my Purple Crowns are in with my Blue Faced Parrot Finches..........I can tell when the PCs have hatchlings, guess who is on my shoulder as I'm dishing out the white ants!................and they love fresh grass seed heads and sprouted seed :crazy: ..........poor BFPFs have to wait for their turn

I love the Lorikeet hour of madness each morning & arvo..........ours are getting really noisy mainly because its becoming a sizeable group and they join in with the local Scalies and Rainbows.....the Varieds are very quiet as pairs.........in a group its a different story! :crazy: :oops:

Good luck.....if for some reason the other half doesnt like 'em, give me a hoy ;)

Would rice flour work? Mckenzies do a rice flour. Box of 375 grams. Cant remember how much it cost though, will have a look next time Im in the supermarket.

Yep, there's both rice flour ...about $1 at the Asian grocer shop ;) and rice meal (rice bubbles for ease)........I must admit I never queried why both are in the mix but the meal(bubbles) never grind up superfine. I probably need to simplify the whole mix a bit I must admit. I've also seen some dry mixes for sale where they proclaim not to have any rice flour.......I suspect there are some people who believe it not to be good for them????

Mickp, I forgot.....theres a generous teaspoon of Avi-vite in the dry mix. Old mate I got my original birds from put calcium in his mix, I had an old container of avi-vite and read there's merit in supplementing vitamin D3.............thats what your birds get out of you giving them Cod Liver Oil, but only if you do it right apparently...........I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone, so to speak :eh: , use up the old container and get some calcium AND D3 into my birds..............havent killed any, quite the opposite 8-)
