Eorix ...in your rush to check on your birds please dont forget that water and electricity dont mix ...we already have a Buzz on here
seriously be careful.

Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Sorry for your loss but I think the birds soon learn the boundaries of the cage but in a panic may forget and if it wasn't your window it could have just as easily been a wall. I lost 2 Javas to a night fright last night myself so it's not just glass but collisions with anything solid and glass probably appears to be like a clear flight path - just like the black paint on the inside of my aviaries. (I 'll have to lighten the inside next time the painting is due.) I think I may have had a cat trying to get into the avairy here - the birds were screeching & banging about the cage which woke the kids up and set the dogs barking.

Sitting and waiting for dawn this morning was not the easiest time.Especially the amount of rain we had over night, in excess of 150mm also the lights not comming on was my biggest worry.
Anyway,I do not know how but the 3 nests I was worried about have come through,They must be tough little things as the nests are out in the open,I guess the females know how to line a nest to protect the chicks. The rest seem to be ok which also surprised me.
I also found out why the lights didn't come on. All my lights are wired into an industrial time clock and according to my mate who arrived just after dawn the power went off for virtually a second. The break was not big enough for the house hold items to carry on but enough to trip the contacts on the time clock.
It is ironic if I had used a $10 cheap timer there would have been no problem as it would have kept on going. Anyway I discovered it and all seems ok.
The aviaries are far too wet to go searching but things look all right, also even though it rained and rained the temperature was still in the mid 20's

E Orix - glad to here everything looks Ok this morning. I've just spotted a pair of longtails in my outside aviary who've built a nest in a shrub right out in the open and we're expecting big rains over the next week.
My glass issue - the flyscreens on many of the house windows are roughly the same size as the aviary windows. I'll pilfer a few of these and mount them on the inside of the aviary windows somehow. I'll post some pics once I get it going.

The Desert park has glass veiwing windows and they are a real problem. We are in the process of opening up some of the aviaries into walk through, and deleting the glass. Many a bird has been injured flying into the glass and because its a tourist park we cant really put tape across the glass.I think Debs idea of some brush would work well.I saw a great bird room in Adelaide years ago and it had a glass veiwing area out to a large planted aviary. The guy didnt have any problems with the glass so it seems it can work well if you put some thought into it.I would love a set up like that but its pretty hard to guarantee no night frights.
