Hi guys I have been debating with myself, about the best time to give soaked seed for my breeding birds to co-inside with my work hours, I usually give the seed in the arvo two hours before nightfall and leave it till the following arvo, but I am sure alot of you would not recommend I cease this practice.

Thats why I am here asking you for ideas, I have heard you shouldn't leave seed over night because of bacteria breeding and then your breeder's give it to their young :? ?????

I leave for work at 6:30 most mornings, and get home about 4:30 - 5:00. What should I be doing giving them soaked seed in the morning or evening or both???
and my other problem is I can't get near the cage in the morning as my Double Bars are very flighty at that time of the day as the sun hasn't come up yet and thet smash themselves into the wire  .....

I am working on an eternal feeder and another aviary for my breeders.

Thanks guys

Hi Nosaj76 & welcome to the forum!

I would be careful about leaving soaked seed for 24 hrs, particularly during the warmer months- it can cause real problems.

If you can feed twice daily then obviously that would be better. If you have less time in the morning do most of it in the afternoon. Most birds prefer to feed in the early morning so feeding them at this time is beneficial, especially if they have chicks.

If you can install a night-light- a low wattage light which is left on overnight, then this will allow you to feed the birds in the dark and avoid night frights from predators and nuisance animals and noises.

I feed mine every morning and remove the previous days soaked seed at the same time.Mind you I do it the fidler way with virkon-s.I have not had any problems to date, and feed out a little more then they will eat that day,Mind you it maybe different in more humid climates done this way.It is impossible all year to take it out earlier when i am away 13 hours a day while at work.
