My Star finches hatched out their first 2 eggs in Dec, 1 survived.Last Sunday I decided to have a clear out in the aviary ,
picked up a bunch of brush, put it near the door to remove and out came 3 star babies. Put it all back and cursed myself
for a silly old fool but glad to say all 3 are hopping and flying around the aviary and been feed by the parents.
Another steep learning curve for me.
Cheers Greg.
Normally they are good parents. Things that could affect are, 1. Age of the birds, they maybe knew to feeding young and still learning. 2. Weather conditions not sure how hot or wet it may have been. 3. Something may have scared them at night left the nest. 4. What other birds are in the aviary, how many times did you inspect the nest etc.
The positive is that you know they are a breeding pair, give them a week or two, they will begin building again. You'll be right patience is the key.
Bushranger, I did this a couple of years ago. Time to cleanout the grass pile in the corner of the avairy. Oops, little orange breasteds in all directions. And they literaly explode outwards, so hard to round up 6 madly fluttering little ones and get them back. Half made it to full grown.
