finch seed

just wondering,do any of you do your own seed mix? I dont drive so its hard to buy special finch seed regularly as I only go to supermarkets.
(I have zebs,gouldians,maniquins,double bar and painted)
today I mentioned I feed them budgie seed and a sprinkle of niger and bird guy was not impressed..he said I should never feed them budgie canary was better.Im thinking I can buy canary and perhaps just add other seed..what gos into a nice finch seed ? in what qtys?
or do you guys use supermarket seed and think its ok?

If your unable to get a mix thruogh a petshop/produce store, you might be better off to get a finch mix through one of the online stores, eg birds r us, or the like, most supermaket blends, & some petshop blends, are made to a price, & you end up wasting alot of seed & actually end up paying more because not all the seed is consumed. In Sydney, you might want to try Aviculture Accessories, think there out at Marsden, but can post/courier product to you.

hmm had a look at those sites ,have come across a place called petbarn at kogarah ,i emailed to see if they deliver or I guess perhaps even a taxi if i could buy enough to make wothwhile as it would be about $20 to my place...I do find they dont eat all the budgie seed I always give leftovers to the pidgion,I just got told 30 yrs ago to feed them bird seed when I got my first zebs from paddys market!!

U could do worse than checking out Elenbee Seeds in Sydney there as they have some excellent seed stocks and mix seed to your own recipe.

They also have drums of specialty seeds from which to make tonic type mixes.

Not associated with company just another happy seed mix buyer!!!!
