well went to the bird store at carringbah in sydney today as blue butterfly said it was good..just wanted 2 nest boxs and a pair of zebs ..left with 4 nest boxs ,various seed and a pair of double bars and a pair of painteds.
A lot of the finchs there I had seen mentioned here but not actualy seen so very interesting .The male red painted embla is a vey flighty fellow and his orange girl very shy..they dont seem to be friends yet and he hides in leaves on the floor when hes not panicing so im hoping they will befriend eachother
The double bars are so sweet ,they took about 1 min to find a nest and its now all tidied up and they are in it..im thinking I will try and get more of them at some stage.I loved the star finchs as well
my question is ...do these guys need anything special that I should do will the emblas use a nest box ? or should I get more leaves for the floor? and will they be fine with budgie seed and niger or do they like something more exotic? the double bars seem to be fitting in fine but iv not seen the emblas eat(although I just looked up and they are sitting on opp perchs staring at eachother so I guess thats progress of a type!!)

Hi congratulations on your new birds. I also have bought birds from the Birds Nest (nice shop). Do you have an aviary or cage? I have my emblemas in an aviary with lots of bushy branches and some hanging baskets and lots of nesting materials. They have made their own nests in the baskets and also made a nest with the nesting material. The Pet Warehouse on Taren Point Rd has nesting materials for sale. They don't eat budgie mix get yourself a good finch mix, cut some lebansese cucumber in half.fresh grass seedlings, get some grit. Mine love to spend alot of time on the ground and I have some rocks in the aviary they like to sit on. Good luck with your birds.

ok thanks, they are in a breeding cage at the moment.I cant have an avery as im right on the river and rats come, they can chew through wire in this area!!.I have just brought some big avery type cages and once I set those up the emblas and the double bars can have one :D so i will start sterilising some rocks and I could make some little hanging baskets.
They are all having a great time this morning with fresh grass seed and shreaded bark ...

welcome, not sure the size of the cages the birds are in or how many pairs but in future best to quarantine birds, they can stress in new environment, thats more than likely the reason they are flight and shy. get some finch mix and probiotic for the water, look at worming as well. all the best, enjoy the birds.

Hi Amalan,

The finches you have a very easy to look after without too many special feeding, however Budgie mix is for Budgies! lol - it is not very good to feed finches as their only seed. You really need to feed them a proper "Finch Mix", and they will certainly appreciate a little extra canary seed, tonic mix, egg mix, fresh seed grass, corn & peas, Lebanese cucumber and some even like a bit of fruit (orange / apple). You wont really need live food to breed these species but they don't mind the odd meal worm as a treat. Have a look around for the different diets breeders feed their finches for some good ideas. I wont be very expensive since you only have a few birds.
